Indian Meteorological Department issued a warning that temperature is likely to touch 44 degrees Celsius in Jammu by the end of May. School timings already changed in Jammu due to the soaring temperature.

 

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave alert for Jammu, warning that temperatures are expected to reach 44 degrees Celsius by the end of May. This extreme weather has already prompted changes in school timings and disrupted daily life.

In its bulletin on Thursday, the IMDa also forecasts warm nights and hot, humid weather for the next five days. The heatwave is expected to affect isolated pockets of Jammu Division, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, northeast Madhya Pradesh, West Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Vidarbha, East Uttar Pradesh, and north Madhya Maharashtra.

 

Heat Wave, Warm Night, and Hot & Humid weather warning for the next 5 days:

❖ Heatwave conditions are very likely in isolated pockets of Jammu division, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Vidarbha during the 23rd-27th; Gujarat state during 23rd-26th; West Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Maharashtra during 23rd-25th; Punjab on the 23rd; East Uttar Pradesh during 25th-27th May 2024.

❖ Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions very likely in many/most parts of Rajasthan during 23rd-27th; in some/many parts of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh during 23rd-27th; West Uttar Pradesh during 26th & 27th; in isolated pockets of Delhi during 24th-27th May, 2024.

For the past week, temperatures in Jammu and surrounding areas have consistently exceeded 41 degrees Celsius. In response, the School Education Department (SED) has adjusted school timings in the summer zone, now operating from 8 AM to 12 Noon since May 20.

District Magistrate Jammu appeals to people to take of their health.

Deputy Commissioner Jammu Sachin Kumar Vaishya has appealed to citizens to take care of their health and well-being in view of the extremely hot weather condition. He urged everyone to drink sufficient fluids frequently and avoid going out during peak temperature hours

 

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for heatwaves on May 22, 23, and 23 with no relief anticipated until May 28. Today’s bulletin also forecasts warm nights and hot, humid weather for the next five days. The heatwave is expected to affect isolated pockets of Jammu Division, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, northeast Madhya Pradesh, West Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Vidarbha, East Uttar Pradesh, and north Madhya Maharashtra.

An IMD official stated, “Currently, temperatures are hovering between 41 to 42 degrees, but we anticipate a further increase to 44 degrees around May 27-28.” The highest recorded temperature in Jammu was 47.4 degrees on May 26, 1984.

 

Recent years have seen similar spikes in temperature during late May. Last year, on May 23, the temperature reached 42.0 degrees, and in previous years, temperatures ranged from 41.6 to 44.1 degrees around this time.

 

The weather outlook for the next week suggests generally dry conditions with isolated chances of thundershowers. While the heatwave continues to impact the plains of Jammu Division, hilly districts in Jammu and the plains of Kashmir Division will also experience hot and dry weather.

 

In light of these conditions, the SED has instructed all chief education officers to revise school timings in consultation with their respective deputy commissioners. For winter zones in the Jammu Division, adjustments will be made as necessary.

 

With maximum temperatures hovering between 40 to 42 degrees Celsius for the past week, residents are advised to stay indoors and take precautions against the extreme heat.
